7 Sustainable Restaurants Around the World
Here at Rupp PR it’s no secret – we LOVE good food! Almost as much as we love sustainability, so when you combine the two, our dreams come true. Sometimes it’s hard finding a great sustainable restaurant, so we took the time to collect seven amazing choices from around the world. Whether you live close to one of these places or you’re taking an eco-friendly trip, visit and find out what makes each of them so unique!
1. The Foodbarn , Cape Town
First on the list we’re taking you down to Cape Town where sustainable living is thriving! The Foodbarn is located just outside the city in Noordhoek Farm Village. Initially created as a small sandwich stall, The Foodbarn has now become one of Cape Town’s most prominent fine dining restaurants.
What makes this restaurant so great is its dedication to the local community where it sources all of its ingredients within an 80 kilometer radius of Cape Town. They also have dedicated nights to serving meat and fish ethically and rarely – usually about once a week – teaming up with local businesses to bring you the best Cape Town has to offer.
2. The Duke of Cambridge Pub, London
Over in Europe, London is home to the first and only organic pub in Britain. They regularly change their menu so they use seasonal and locally sourced ingredients. Plus, it allows them to take any extra produce off their suppliers’ hands so everything is used.
Their dedication to a sustainable lifestyle is also reflected in their interior with all of their furniture and decor being second hand or recycled! They host charitable dinners to raise money for the local community. As they put it on their website they are “on a simple mission to positively impact our world by using hospitality as a force for good.”
3. Open Farm Community, Singapore
According to many reviews, Open Farm Community in Tanglin is the most sustainable restaurant in South East Asia. The restaurant is set on a gorgeous plot of land at the end of the farm in a greenhouse that includes an open kitchen and dining room.
They are all for farm-to-fork food and you can even watch farmers collect produce for your meal as you dine! Adding to that, you can attend talks they give on sustainability. With its unique food and location, the Open Farm Community is a must for any eco-friendly eater.
4. Uncommon Ground, Chicago
Opened back in 1991 as a cafe, Uncommon Ground has stuck to their sustainability for over 20 years, consistently sourcing local and seasonal produce. Now a major restaurant in Chicago and the greenest restaurant in America, they are a great supporter of the community with local art exhibitions and live performances.
Besides their support for the local community, they have also created eco-friendly infrastructure by using a solar thermal system. Plus they have their own organic rooftop farm where they use everything in their restaurants – even honey from their bees!
5. Central, Lima
Possibly one of the coolest menus we’ve ever seen, Central in Lima takes its inspiration from the natural landscape of Peru. The goal is to highlight the wonderful diversity of Peruvian people and food by including ingredients from all over the country and from different local communities.
What really amazes us is the biological and cultural research center they created in order to better understand Peruvian land, food, traditions and history. Plus it scored a 98% with Food Made Good Global, making it one of the most sustainable restaurants in South America – how green is that?
6. Flock, Brisbane
Working with the local community is big at Flock located just outside Brisbane. Everything is locally sourced, right down to the plates you eat on! They’re from a local potter. Enjoy seasonal, local, and sustainable food at this eco award winning restaurant.
What’s really special about Flock? They return all of their leftover food from the kitchen to their local farm for it to be composted!
7. Bonus: Good Bank, Berlin
Our bonus restaurant comes from our home country, Germany! Located in Berlin, a great city for finding sustainable options, is Good Bank. This a really special environment as the restaurant has transformed itself into a literal urban farm by using the vertical farming technique.
Diners will be able to see their dinner being collected right before their eyes from the lines of greens on the walls! And everything is chemical free! While sustainable restaurants can get pricey, Good Bank tries to keep it affordable so everyone can enjoy the cool atmosphere and sustainable cooking.
