Right now, the EU climate targets are to cut down emissions by 55% by 2030 and be fully climate neutral by 2050. Currently, the Climate Action Tracker<\/a> rates the EU\u2019s climate action as insufficient, meaning that the EU is not doing enough to reach these objectives or putting in the effort to support developing countries in their own endeavours to reach these objectives. <\/p>\n On June 7th 2021, a new draft on sustainable guidelines for climate action, energy use, and environmental protection was created with intent to adopt them by January 1st 2022. These guidelines are an extension to the previous 2014-2020 guidelines which were set to expire at the end of 2020. <\/p>\n \u201cThe <\/strong>European Commission<\/strong><\/a> has stated the need for a \u2018350 billion euro annual investment\u2019 to meet the 2030 targets.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n The European Commission<\/a> has stated the need for a \u201c350 billion euro annual investment\u201d to meet the 2030 targets. These new guidelines broaden the original policies in order to simplify the rules to provide \u201cflexibility for new technologies\u201d, create \u201ccompatibility and consistency\u201d for member states, and to help member states \u201cachieve their energy and climate objectives at lower costs\u201d. This should have benefits to taxpayers and keep the single market competition strong and consistent. Moreover, according to the Commission, state aid will not be given to anything involving the \u201cmost polluting fossil fuels\u201d and public funding will be allocated to \u201ctruly green\u201d initiatives.<\/p>\n First and foremost, the current actions of the EU are not enough and, according to the Climate Action Tracker<\/a>, not consistent with the Paris Agreement. Their efforts are rated as insufficient and there is a dire need for them to increase action against climate change. <\/p>\n \u201cThere have been major steps they [The EU] have taken for environmental protection.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Before we address the issues with the EU\u2019s climate action policy, there have been major steps they have taken for environmental protection. These being the Paris Climate Accords and the European Green Deal which are helping member states of the EU and international allies to better combat climate change together. These agreements have also been backed with concrete policy and finance, which demonstrates both ability and desire to help the climate on the EU\u2019s part. Finally, European Climate Law has now made targets for emissions reductions and climate neutrality a binding goal. <\/p>\n \u201cRight now, the <\/strong>Climate Action Tracker<\/strong><\/a>, estimates that the EU will be unable to go beyond the 55% emissions reductions but it could be achieved through policy change.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n The EU needs to dedicate more finances to climate action as it is not meeting its contributions. However, policy implementation by EU member states has not been effective. There must be a concrete plan created in order to get rid of coal. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n Domestic Target \u2013 The current targets set up by the EU are good, and the Paris Agreement could be met if kept to, however there is no evidence for any reductions in emissions passed 55%.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Fair Share Target \u2013 Measured against the fair share allocations for each nation, there is vital need for improvement to meet the Paris Agreement. Two solutions have been suggested: an improvement to internal emissions targets and better financial support for developing countries emissions reductions. According to Climate Action Tracker, if each nation followed the EU example \u201cwarming would reach 3\u00b0C\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Climate Finance \u2013 The EU contributions are currently too low. There will also be restrictions set in place in order to manage microplastics, biodegradables, labeling, and packaging which will benefit the environment. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n Greener and Sustainable Agriculture \u2013 new rules on pesticides, encourage biodiversity, and implement farm to fork strategies.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Circular Economy \u2013 strengthen owner\u2019s rights to repair products instead of replacing them to extend the life of products, create a sustainable product policy.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n International Transition into a Green Society \u2013 finance for less developed countries and carbon trading for housing and transport.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Renewable Energy \u2013 wider spread use of renewable energy, support and guidance for implementation of renewable energy.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n According to the CBI<\/a>, there are plenty of benefits for businesses but these do not come without obstacles. We are expecting that there will be a larger implementation of renewable energy, better energy efficiency, increase of waste reduction, and policies to lower emissions. Businesses will need to adopt these rules to comply with the European Climate Law and their goals for the member states which are binding. <\/p>\n\n
